I am born and raised in Baltimore and have loved every minute of it. I currently teach 4th grade at Perry Hall Elementary. I am a huge Ravens and Red Sox fan and I also love NC State basketball. I love and will buy pretty much anything with polka dots. And in my spare time I enjoy a nap. :)
Work from Class 1:
Web 2.0 is a term for the 2nd generation of the WWW. This new generation includes more sharing of information and allows more information to be stored, uploaded, and shared with everyone on the web. This also includes the availability of apps and online stores. Web 2.0 can be accessed by anyone and can be used almost anywhere, anytime.
Have students create word clouds that generate understanding of a concept, standards or vocabulary word.
Have a students analyze their frequency of word usage in a writing
Create a word cloud and have students create a story from what they see in the cloud. They can then make a word cloud of their own story.
Have students predict what might happen in a portion of text that is coming next. This can also be used to have students pick out possible important words and meaning of something they just read.
Have students create a word cloud of biographies of famous people in history.
Create word clouds using geometric shapes with vocabulary words to fit in those shapes. Since Wordle cannot do this you will need to use Tagul or Tagxedo.
USA Women break the World Record in Swimming
This video could be used before an addition or subtraction with decimals lesson. Students could record different decimals and solve various problems using the numbers. Students could also find the difference between the old WR and the new USA WR. This video gives a real life example of decimals being used.
Chance of Winning the Mega Millions
Use this video as a motivation before starting a probability unit. This video could be used in intermediate elementary grades or middle school grades. For the elementary students, this video could just show how probability is used in daily life. For middle school students, they could reenact their own lottery and try and find the probability of drawing various numbers. Students can go into the ideas of permutations and combinations.
I actually used these recently in my classroom. I had found the LearnZillion videos first and used them to reinforce the skill in class. I liked that they were easily accessible and quick and detailed. The students enjoyed the video, but the same fractions were used in each video which made them redundant. I would have liked different fractions being used so I could more accurately tell if my students were understanding the information. Also, the practice on one of the videos would not load. :(
I wish I would have found the KhanAcademy videos first because of the practice links. The links include hints that the students can use to help them find the correct answer. Each time they click the hint button, a more detailed hint appears. The videos can be a little drawn out which causes them to lose their effectiveness.
